How this was nominated for awards, I have no idea. I was so excited to see this movie. I bought the book before seeing it and was slowly working my way through reading it. I got maybe 40 pages into the book when we decided to see the movie. (My intent was to finish the book first, but the other movie options that night were not great.)
I was incredibly disappointed. Surprising, as it got so much hype and it was done by Focus Features – one of my favorites. Consequently, I’ve hardly looked at the book since seeing the movie, which is too bad, because there’s a good chance I would love reading it.

I was cruising though some of your reviews (looking for good movies to watch!) and was so surprised you didn't like this one! I loved this movie and the book, which I actually read after I saw the movie.
While it's an incredibly sad love story, it's one that makes you realize at the end that it wasn't about who you thought it should be about. It was Briony's atonement and not Robbie's or Cecilia's as we were all hoping. That is a staggering truth to swallow as the fly on the wall, watching everything unfold with an omnicient advantage, but a huge testimony to our lives. Frequently, things are not what we think they should be.
I don't know...terribly sad, but such an excellent story. The movie is nearly identical to the book and I think after watching and reading it my appreciation just grew for the story rather than what I thought should have happened. It's the mark of an excellent writer to be able to tell an engaging story that has an ending no one is expecting. Be it glorious or tragic. (of course what is engaging is subjective on the viewer)
Or maybe....I just really like James Mcavoy...
